Nestor Sulu — Beijing, China

The Journey

A Mexican in the Middle Kingdom

Twenty years ago I traded tacos for dumplings, Spanish for Mandarin, and the familiar for the unknown. What started as an adventure became a life — and this is the long-form version of how it happened.

2006

The Leap

I arrived with two suitcases, three phrases of Mandarin, and a one-way ticket. Everyone said I'd be back in six months. They were half right — I did go back. To visit.

2010

Learning to Belong

The years of being the foreigner in every room. Language blunders, landlord negotiations, and the slow magic of becoming a regular at a noodle shop.

2015

The Camera Years

I started filming — not to explain China, but to show it. The markets, the mountains, the people who became my family. Nestor in China was born.

2020

The Test

The years that tested every expat. Staying wasn't the easy choice — it was the only honest one. This is home.

2026

Twenty Years In

Two decades, one country, thousands of stories. This magazine is where the ones too deep for video finally get told.
